Datamonitor: The latest smart card deployment trends

A new look at the ROI for enterprise
smart cards

Datamonitor recently published a new report, entitled "A new look at the ROI for enterprise smart cards". This report is now available for free, courtesy of ActivIdentity.

Learn about the latest trends in smart card deployments based on Datamonitor's survey data with over 200 IT professionals.

Analysis summary

Datamonitor’s survey of over 200 enterprises coupled with its analysis of the market for secure access smart card solutions has revealed:

  • There are a number of hard dollar (tangible) and soft dollar (intangible) cost savings stem from the deployment of a secure access smart card solution.
  • Close to 40 man hours per week would be saved by enterprises in the survey were their identification credentials to be replaced by a smart card and single sign on solution.
  • Enterprises are generally operating different password systems for applications and databases, networks and workstations, representing an inefficient means of employee identification.
  • 62% of enterprises have experienced problems relating to passwords being shared, borrowed or stolen from within their organizations.
  • Only 21% of enterprises are confident that passwords will provide sufficient user authentication for their businesses over the next five years.
  • 80% of respondents recognize that smart cards would provide benefits to their organizations.
  • The majority of respondents believe that enterprises in their industry are moving towards a single ID for physical and logical access.

Overview

Diversified vertical markets

Over the last three years there have been clear indications of a diversification in the vertical markets deploying converged smart card solutions, with notable traction in the likes of education, retail and manufacturing. This indicates an increase in interest in smart cards as a horizontal solution, suggesting drivers that stem from within organizations rather than from an industry as a whole.

Changing approach to deployment

This paper aims to identify the factors that may be changing enterprises’ approach to deploying smart cards for logical and physical access. The paper examines the case for consolidating different types of employee identification, identifies enterprises’ approach to passwords and outlines the perceived benefits of smart cards.

Looking back

The paper revisits prior Datamonitor research to examine how smart cards are being deployed in the enterprise today, assesses any changes to the factors influencing market conditions, and calculates a basic ROI with findings from the primary research.
